By: leongmart

This post reminded me about a humorous line I read in the magazine '8 Days' about parents sending their child to Speech and Drama and not being happy when the child wants to be an actor.

Personally, I think it is fine if the child has the talent and passion for acting (thinking of Zoe Tay and other very successful local actors). Even if they don't be that famous or popular, in pursuing a lower salary career, enjoying the job and being happy is more important than having a high paying job with lots of stress, anger, dissatisfaction and unhappiness.

In any case, speech and drama isn't aimed at giving a child a acting career. It is more about developing the self-confidence and the speaking ability of the child. These are traits required in any job in the future, not just acting. And for children who are not academically inclined, they may just find their area of excellence in speech and drama. So if this is what they do best, they should be encouraged. Who knows, they may end up as motivational speakers, life coaches, lawyers, etc, not just actors.

By: geok551

Since we do not know Amy and Bell's sharings, we will have to minus the amt spent by Amy from the total, that's
26 - 4 = 22
Now they have equal share, therefore
22/2 = 11
Amy has 11 only when Bell gave her 5, therefore
11-5 = 6
To get what Amy had at first, you have to add back what she had spent, that's is
6 + 4 =10

Hope this is clear.

By: chino

Amy and Bell had $26 altogether at first. After spending $4, Amy received $5 from Bell. They have the same amount of money now.
How much did Amy have at first ?

my ans is
26 divided by 2 = 13
13 + 4 - 5 = 12

model answer is 26 - 4 = 22
22 divide by 2 = 11
11 + 4 - 5 = 10

Can u help to explain if u agree with the model answer.
Thank you.

By: tanhuimin

1) A cupboard has 3 shelves. There are 48 books altogether on the shelves. Mei Lin removed 8 books from the top shelf and placed them on the middle shelf. She removed 6 books from the middle shelf and placed them on the lowest shelf. As a result, 3 shelves had the same number of books. How many books were on the middle shelf at first?

Solution :
Top Shelf -8
Middle Shelf +8 -6
Lowest Shelf +6

48/3 = 16
middle shelf +8 -6 = 16
middle shelf = 16 -2 = 14
Answer : 14 books were on the middle shelf at first.

2) Tom and Peter shared a sum of money. If Tom gave $350 to Peter, they would have the same amount of money. If Peter gave $100 to Tom, he would have half as much money as Tom. How much money did Tom had at first?

Tom gave $350 to Peter, and they would have the same amount of money implies that Tom has $700 mode than Peter
use this as a base to draw a model.

From the model, (see attached)
1u = 100 + 700 + 100 = 900
Tom has 2 x 900 - 100 = 1700.
Answer : Tm has $1700 at first.
