Question:
There are 30 pupils in a class. 17 join computer club, 19 join basketball and 2 do not join any CCA.
How many pupils are in both computer clubs and basketball?

Answer :13

Does anyone know how to solve this problem ?

I agree with W13158. Question seems not complete either the numbers in question are wrong or the answer.

I can only think of below way to solve this question but answer doesn't tally.

Total pupils in class = 30
Pupils who do not join any CCA = 2
Pupils effectively joined in 1 or more CCA = 30 -2 = 28

Total pupils in CCA all together = pupils in comp club + pupils in b'ball club = 17 + 19 = 36

So Pupils common in both CCA's = 36 - 28 = 8

can anyone help to correct if my solution is wrong?

My answer is the same as pkrdd. I solve the question using a venn diagram.

Hmmm interesting .. instead of scratching our heads, best is to go back and ask teacher on solution. drop her an e-mail. since PSLE is close lets not waste time on this

For me I really doubt if all 3 of us could go wrong. Most likely answer is wrong or typo error in numbers. May be total students are 25 (not 30) or may be pupils who did not join any CCA are 7 (not 2) !!!
