1. Joanne and Bob were given the same amount

of allowance last month. After Joanne spent $18

and Bob spent $3, the amount of allowance Bob

had left was 6 times that of what Joanne had left. How

much allowance did each child receive last month?

2. Kivesh, Dave and Fred have a total savings of

$2712. Dave's savings is twice that of Kivesh's.

Fred's savings is thrice that of Kivesh's. How much

more savings has Fred than Kivesh?

Hi there,

1. (Gap & Difference concept)

Before
J |-------------------------|
B |-------------------------|

After
J |-----|<-----------------|
1u 18

B |-------------------|<---|
6u 3

Unit difference = 6u - 1u = 5u
Gap = 18 - 3 = 15
Hence, 5u ----> 15
1u -----> 15 / 5 = 3
J ( at first ) = 1u + 18 ----> 3 + 18 = 21

Hence, each child received $21 allowance last month
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. (Comparison model)

F |-----|-----|-----| }
K |-----| } 2712
D |-----|-----| }

Hence, 6u ---> 2712
1u ----> 2712 / 6 = 452

F - K = 2u ----> 2 x 452 = 904
Hence, Fred has $904 more than Kivesh
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cheers,
Edward
