there were 2018 pupils in a school last year. this year, the number of boys has been reduced by 1/5 and the number of girls has been reduced by 0.25. there are as many boys and girls in the school now.
a) how many pupils are in the school now?
b) how many boys and girls are in the school at first?

Hi

I think there is a typo error --> 2018 should be 2108

This year, 4/5 boys = 3/4 girls -->12/15 boys = 12/16 girls
So, last year, Boys : Girls --> 15u : 16u ... 31u --> 2108, 1u --> 68, Boys --> 1020, Girls --> 1088
This year, Boys = Girls --> 4/5 x 15u = 12u, Total --> 24u --> 24 x 68 = 1632

a) total 1632 pupils in school this year
b) last year, Boys --> 1020, Girls --> 1088

cheers.
