Hi friends,

Could any one help me to solve this problem.

mrs.Tan and mrs.Lee has 180 strawberries altogether. After mrs.Tan gave 13 strawberries to mrs.lee, she has 5 times as many strawberries as mrs.lee. how many strawberries did mrs. tan have at first?

Help me with the hints how to solve these kinds of problems. Thanks for your help.

Many thanks,

wonderwork.

After :
Ms Tan: |==|==|==|==|==| 5 units
Ms Lee: |==| 1 units

Total = 6 units
Total = 180 strawberries
1unit = 180/6 = 30 strawberries

Before :
Ms Tan = 5 units + 13 = 150 +13 =163 strawberries
Ms Lee=1 unit - 13 = 30 - 13 = 17 strawberries

Hi,

But I still wonder why do we have to divide first instead of minus the 13 first?

Mrs Tan and Mrs.Lee had 180 strawberries altogether.
After Mrs.Tan gave 13 strawberries to Mrs.Lee, [Action: Minus 13 (1st]
she had 5 times as many strawberries as Mrs.Lee [Result: Total of 6 Times (2nd)].
How many strawberries did Mrs. Tan have at first?

As you are working backwards, so you act on 2nd (First) {6 Times) - So now Divide by 6.
Then act on 1st (Second) (Miuse 13) - So now add 13[/u[/b]].
