Further clarification is needed for this question with regards to (b). While working on the solution, stumbled upon some calculation that doesnt fit into the question.

Here is my worked solution, anyway.

J = 5u ; K + L = 7u --- (1)

K = 1u ; J + L = 7u --- (2)

In these 2 comparison statements, J, K, L contributed the same equal total donation in each of these comparisons.

Applying Unchanged Total concept, the respective totals ( in units ) are ...

J = 5u ; K + L = 7u ; Total = 12u --- (3)

K = 1u ; J + L = 7u ; Total = 8u --- (4)

Since the respective totals are same, find the common multiple (LCM) of 12 and 8, i.e. 24.

(3) x 2: J = 10u; K + L = 14u; Total = 24u

(4) x 3: K = 3u ; J + L = 21u ; Total = 24u

Hence J = 10u; K = 3u; L = 24u - 13u = 11u;

(a) J / L = 10 / 11

(b)* < Clarification needed here. Your question stated - Ken donated $232 more than Lynn. However, based on my calculation, ( K - L ) results in -ve value. Took the liberty to change this to L - K instead, until further confirmation from your end. >

Given that L - K = $232, we have ...

L - K = 11u - 3u --> 232

8u --> 232

1u --> 29

Therefore, L's donation = 11u --> 11 x 29 = $319
