1) In a multi-storey carpark, there were a total of 294 vans, cars and motorcycles. The ratio of the number of vans to the number of cars was 2:5. After 1/2 of the cars, 2/3 f the motorcycles and none of the vans left, there were 150 vehicles remaining in the multi-storey carpark. How many cars were in the multi-storey carpark at first?

2) There were 591 pupils in a school hall. After 3/5 of the boys and 7/8 of the girls left the school hall, there were 102 more boys than girls. How many boys left the school hall?

HI Strawberry Big Grin

For question number 2 i would suggest that you change the boys denominator and the girls denominator to the same .

So....

3/5 (Boys)
7/8 (Girls)

Will become:

15/40 (Boys)

35/40 (Girls)

Hope that it will help you in finding the rest.

Will use units and parts to solve both qns.

1) <At first>

Van: Cars---->2u:5u = 4u: 10u
Motorcylces---> 3p

14u + 3p = 294---(1)

<After>
Van: Cars---->4u:5u
Motorcylces---> 1p

9u + 1p = 150---(2)

(2) x 3---> 27u + 3p = 450---(3)

(3) - (1)--->13u-->156
1u---> 12
No. of cars at first---10 x 12 = 120

Ans: 120 cars
Big Grin

2) <At First>
Boys---> 5u, Girls---> 8p

5u + 8p = 591----(1)

<After>
Boys--->2u, Girls---> 1p

2u - 1p = 102---(2)
Rewrite (2) as 2u -102 = 1p and multiply the expression by 8, we have

16u - 816 = 8p---(3)

Subs. (3) into (1), we have

5u + 16u - 816 = 591
21u =1407
1u = 67
No. of boys who left the school hall ---> 67 x 3 = 201

Ans: 201 boys Big Grin
