Hi! I am stuck with this question. May you help me with it?

At first, Wendy had twice as many balls as Fiona. After Wendy sold some of her balls, Fiona had twice as many balls as she had. Wendy sold each ball for \$6 and for every 4 ball that were sold, she received a bonus of \$5.
a) Given that Wendy received \$1218 in all from the sale of the balls, how many balls did she sell altogether?
b) How many balls did Wendy have at first?

Hey Shirley,

I have reason to believe the solution provided by Hoang Quang Anh is incorrect.

His solution for (a) is 210. This means Wendy sold 210 balls. Each ball was sold for \$6; hence amt collected = 210 x 6 = \$1260. This already exceeds the sales amount of \$1218 given in the question ( and this has not accounted for the additional bonus of \$5 for every 4 balls sold ).

Following pls find my worked solution :

<before>
W : F
2 : 1 --- (1)

<Process>
Wendy (W) sold some of her balls;
This means number of balls Fiona (F) had remains unchanged.

<After>
1 : 2

Apply <Unchanged Qty> concept here, multiply ratio (1) 2x so that number of units (qty of balls) remains the same for F.

<before>
W : F
4 : 2

<After>
1 : 2

Hence, W sold 3u of balls.

(a) Given that Wendy received \$1218 in all from the sale of the balls, we have ...

Using <Number x Value> method, we have...

(3u x 6) + [(3u/4) x 5] --> 1218
18u + (15u/4) --> 1218
72u + 15u --> 1218 x 4
87u --> 4872
1u --> 56

W sold 3u --> 3 x 56 = 168

(b) Number of balls W had (at first) = 4u --> 4 x 56 = 224

Trust this helps.

Do let me know if this answer does not agree with your answerkey.

Cheers,
