Section A - Q 8

I've solved this question as follows and got the answer as 18kg but the answer in the answer key is option 3 - 17kg.

60 - 12 - 3 -> 45
3 units -> 45
1 unit -> 15

Kate's mass -> 15 + 3 = 18 kg.

Could you please anyone shed light on the correct and wrong answer.

Thanks a lot.

Hey there,

The mistake is in your very first line as shown:
60 - 12 - 3 -> 45

Your representation of the 3 units is not correct. Did you use a Comparison model to show as part of your method / working?

Following pls find my worked solution:

*** - buffer for alignment purpose

K**|---------------|<--12----->**-
J**|----------------|-------------|***|--> 60 kg
M**|--------|<-3->*************-

From this comparison model,
3u --> 60 - 12 - 3 - 3 = 42
1u --> 14

K = 1u + 3 --> 14 + 3 = 17 kg

================================

Trust the above helps.

Do let me know again if theres further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
