Hey Fanny,

I have some doubts working on this question here as it doesnt come down with a good value.

1. Can you advise me where this question comes from?
3. Do you know if there are editing changes made to the question?

Take this statement , for instance.
The amount of money Nathan has is 1/3 of the total amount of money Tom and Caleb have.

Shouldn't this be :
The amount of money Nathan has is 1/3 of the total amount of money Tom, Min and Caleb have.

Difference between the 2 statements is the latter is giving a proportion of one child to the remaining children.

Greatly appreciate that you can clarify soon.

Thank you ,
Edward

Dear Edward

The question is from Rosyth SA1 2011, paper 1, Q12. My daughter suspects that the question may have an error.

Dear Edward

You are right, there are editing changes made to the question.

The complete question is:

Four children min, nathan, tom and caleb each have some savings. the amount of money Nathan has is 1/3 of the total amount of money,Tom,Min and Caleb have. The amount of money Tom has is 1/4 of the total amount of money Nathan,Min and Caleb have. The amount of money Min has is 1/5 of the total amount of money Nathan,Tom and Caleb have.If caleb saves \$1035,how much do the four children have altogether?.

Hey Fanny,

Yes, the worked solution from the Answerkey provided is based on your re-edited question. This is a typical kind of question for Unchanged Total which I have come across a number of times.

However, I thought the setters might tweak this question a little.

Anyway, see if your daughter wants to try the following:
Use the original question from the paper (without the re-edited changes). The only thing to change is the amount that Caleb saves, as in , If Caleb saves \$1303.50, how much do the four children have altogether?. Try this with a twist

Cheers,
Edward
