Hello can someone help me this question.

The length of a piece of ribbon is 425cm. Mrs Tan cuts the ribbon into 2 pieces. 1/5 of the length of the shorter ribbon and 50% of the length of the longer ribbon adds up to 175 cm. Find the length of the longer ribbon.

Rdgs & Tks.

{--------------------------------425------------------------------}
__________{--------------175 x 2-------------------------}
|_____________{--------175----------}
|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-------------------|-------------------|
{-------short-------------}{----------------long----------------}

Since 1/5S + 50%L -----> 175
then, 2/5S + 100%L-----> 175 x 2 =350

from above, you can see that
3/5S-------> 425 - 350 = 75
1/5S-------> 75/3 = 25
50%L-----> 175 - 25 = 150
100%L---> 150 x 2 = 300

The length of longer ribbon is 300cm

Hey Jessica,

Let me help you with these...

1) why must time 2?
From the model, 175 x 2 --> 2u Short(S) + 2p Long(L) [since 1u(S) + 1p(L) --> 175]

2) what is 3/5 (425-350=75) means?
its actually (3/5)S --> 425-350=75
From the model, its the same as 3u(S) --> 425 - 350 = 75 (using Gap & Difference technique). 350 comes from preceding [ 2u(S) + 2p(L) --> 175 x 2 = 350 ]

================

Trust this clarifies.

Cheers,
Edward
