The number of girls in the school badminton team increased by 40% to 28 and the number of boys decreased by 20% to 24.
Find the overall percentage increase or decrease in the badminton membership. (answer key 4%)

Thanks

Hi Jessica,

Following pls find my worked solution:

G: 140% = 28
100% = (28 ÷ 140) x 100 = 20 (original G)

B: 80% = 24
100% = (24 ÷ 80) x 100 = 30 (original B )

Original G + B = 20 + 30 = 50
Current G + B = 28 + 24 = 52

Overall % inc = (increase in qty / original qty) x 100
= [(52 - 50)/50] x 100 = 4 %

====================

Trust this helps.

Do let me know again if theres any clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
