shirley wee
Urghh... This question is so complicated! Can you help me solve this question?
A group of pupils helped to sell tickets for their school's game carnival at a shopping mall. The number of boys at the mall was 4/5 of the number of girls. Each boy sold 8 tickets and each girl sold 3 tickets. The boys sold 153 more tickets than the girls.
(a) How many pupils were at the mall?
(b) If each ticket was sold for $5, how many money was collected from the sale of the tickets?
Thank you.

Proportion concept using Number x value method :
Boys is 4/5 girls
refering to :
Boys > 4 units
Girls > 5 units
Tabulate the info as :
_________units___Value______Value units
Boys 4u 8 tickets 4 x 8 = 32u
Girls 5u 3 tickets 5 x 3 = 15u
Difference in value units > 32 15 = 17 units
Therefore,
17 units > 153 tickets
1 units > 153 / 17 = 9 tickets
a) Total number of pupils > (4 + 5)units x 9 = 81 (refer to table for units of each)
b) Total tickets sold > (32 + 15) x 9 = 423 tickets (refer to table for Value units)
then, total amount collected > 423 x $5 = $2115
