Hi! Pls help with these questions!

1. Vanessa, Hilton and Dolly were given a box of sweets. Vanessa took 1/3 of the sweets and another 20 from the box. Hilton took 0.5 of the remainder and another 40 from the box. Dolly took the remaining 30 sweets and so there were no more sweets left.

(a) How many sweets were there in the box at first?
(b) How many sweets did Hilton have finally?

Work backwards, 1/2 of the remainder--->40 + 30 = 70
Thus, remainder--> 70 x 2 = 140
So, answering part (b), we have Hilton---> 70 + 40 = 110

2/3 of the total number of sweets---> 140 + 20 = 160
1/3 ----> 160/2 = 80
3/3 ---> 80 x 3 = 240 ( ans for part a)

Ans: (a) 240
(b) 110

40 + 30 = 70
70 x 2 = 140
70 + 40 = 110
140 + 20 = 160

160/2 = 80
80 x 3 = 240
(a) 240
(b) 110
hope this can help
