A full tin of paint has a mass of 27 kg. When the same tin is 2/5 filled with paint, it has a mass of 12 kg. What is the mass of the empty tin?

hey keenlearner,

Following pls find the worked solution :

<------------ 27 ------------->
|<-T->|----|----|----|----|----| -- (1)

<----- 12 ------>
|<-T->|----|----| -- (2)

Using <Gap & Difference> method,

3u --> 15
1u --> 5

In model (2), we have ...

T + 2u --> 12
T --> 12 - 2u --> 12 - (2 × 5)
= 12 - 10 = 2 kg

======================

Trust this helps.

Do let me know again if this is different from your Answerkey or if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
