Hi, I can't solve this problem. Help needed.

Q1. There were some oval and circular shapes in a box. Durai put 48 more circular shapes in the box. Then 40% of the shapes in the box were oval shapes. Later, Durai put another 135 oval shapes in the box. 60% of the shapes in the box were oval shapes now. How many circular shapes were in the box at first?

Hey Rohana,

Following pls find my worked solution:

<before>
O : C
40 : 60
2 : 3

<process>
O: + 135

<after>
60 : 40
3 : 2

Apply <Unchanged Qty> concept {number of C shapes is unchanged}, multiply <before> ratio 2x, <after> ratio 3x.

<before>
O : C
4 : 6

<after>
O : C
9 : 6

5u --> 135
1u --> 27

C (before) = 6u --> 6 × 27 = 162

Hence, number of C (at first) = 162 - 48 = 114

===============

Trust this helps.

Do let me know again if this is different from your Answerkey or if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
