Hi everybody! I'm stuck with this maths question. May you help me? Please show your working clearly using tabulation method.

Qn 1. A man can finish painting his flat in 20 days. If his wife paints together with him, they can finish painting in 12 days. How many days would it take his wife to paint the flat by herself?

Hey Shirley,

This is a typical "Rate" kind of question.

By the way, are you able to handle Q5 on your own? Did you also check your email to see if there is any typo error with the numbers in Q6?

Following pls find my worked solution:

M: paints (1/20) of the flat in 1 day
M+W: paints (1/12) of the flat in 1 day

So, in 1 day, W paints [(1/12) - (1/20)] of the flat.

(1/12) - (1/20) = (5/60) - (3/60)
= (2/60) = 1/30

Hence, W would take 30 days to paint by herself.

Trust this helps.

Do let me know again if this is different from your Answerkey or if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
