Please help with working solution. (I do not have answekey)

1) The ratio of male to female members in a sports club is 5:3. There are 24 Malay members and the rest are chinese. The ratio chinese to malay members is 4 : 3. If there are 14 female malay members, what is the ratio of the chinese male to chinese female members?

2) At the start of a football match, 80% of the spectators were adults. 15 minutes before the match ended, 1920 people left. Then the number of adults among the spectators decreased by 25% and the number of children decreased by 60% . Find the total number of spectators at the start of the football match.

Thanks in advance

Hi Jessica,

Following pls find my worked solution:

*** - for alignment purpose

Q1

M : F **Total
5 : 3 *** 8 -- (1)

C : MY Total
4 : 3 *** 7 -- (2)

Applying <Unchanged Total> concept {since total number of males (M), females (F) = total number chinese (C), malays (MY)}, multiply (1) 7x, (2) 8x.

M : F ** Total
35 : 21 ** 56 -- (3)

C : MY * Total
32 : 24 ** 56 -- (4)

Given there are 24 Malay members,
24u --> 24
1u --> 1

If there are 14 female malay members,
male malay members = 24 - 14 = 10

If there are 10 male malays and 14 female malays,
male chinese = 35 - 10 = 25
female chinese = 21 - 14 = 7

MC : FC
25 : 7

============

Q2

<before>
A : C
80 : 20
4 : 1

<process>
1920 spectators left

<after>
A: 75% of 80 = 60%
C: 40% of 20 = 8%

% of spectators who left:
100% - 68% = 32%

32% = 1920
Total (at first) = 100% = (1920 / 32) × 100
************** = 6000

============

Trust the above helps.

Do let me know again if this is different from your Answerkey or if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
