Carina and Elaine each had some money.If Carina spent 3 times as much Elaine, Carina
would have \$85 left when Elaine had used up all her money. If Elaine spent 3 times as much as
Carina, Carina would have \$597 left when Elaine had used up all her money. How much
money did Carina and Elaine each have?

Hey <achieve_goal>

Following pls find my worked solution:

<1st IF>
C |-----|-----|-----|<---- 85 ---->|
E |-----|

<2nd IF>
C |-|<---------- 597 -------------->|
E |-|-|-|

Since the 1 part (p) of E is divided into 3 equal units (u), the 3 parts (p) of C in <1st IF> is divided likewise. Hence, 3p of C = 9u <1st IF>.

By <Gap & Difference> method and comparing the above 2 models for C, we have ...

9u - 1u = 597 - 85
8u --> 512
1u --> 64

Hence, C = 1u + 597 --> 64 + 597 = \$661
E = 3u --> 3 × 64 = \$192

===========

Trust the above helps.

Do let me know again if this is different from your Answerkey or if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
