Hey <vivilau1112>,

I suppose the <answerkey> of \$177 got you stumped.

So if we put 177 back into the question, we have ...

177 - 25 = 152

After Daisy spent \$25, D : V is 3 : 4.

152 ÷ 3 = 50 2/3

This ends up with \$50 and fraction of a dollar that does not give you the proper cents without rounding off.

Hence, I have every reason to believe that the answerkey provided could be incorrect.

I worked out the answer to be \$217 that is based on my worked solution as follows:

After Daisy (D) spent \$25 on a bag,

<Before>
D : V
3 : 4

<Process>
D: +220
V: -50

<After>
D : V
2 : 1

Applying <Cross-Multiply> method, we have ...

(3u + 220) / 2 = (4u - 50) / 1
3u + 220 = 2 × (4u - 50)
3u + 220 = 8u - 100
8u - 3u = 220 + 100
5u --> 320
1u --> 64

D (at first, after buying bag) = 3u --> 3 × 64 = \$192

D (before buying bag) = 192 + 25 = \$217

=========

Trust this helps clarify.

Do let me know again if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
