Hi Jessica,

Both your questions are about 'water displacement', i.e. the difference between final and initial volume of water when an object(s) is placed in water / liquid. That difference in volume is equivalent to the volume of object(s) placed inside.

Following are my worked solutions:

Q12.

(a)
Volume of water in tank
= Volume of water (with cube) - Volume of Cube
= (80 × 60 × 40) - (20 × 20 × 20)
= 192000 - 8000
= 184000 cm3
= 184 litres

(b)
Time taken to drain water completely
= (184000 ÷ 125)
= 1472 mins
= 24 8/15 hrs

Q13.

(a)
Volume of Iron Ball
= 30 × 25 × 25.5
= 19125 cm3
= 19.125 litres

Height of water level (after iron ball removed)
27 - 25.5 = 1.5 cm

Volume of Water in Tank A
= 30 × 25 × 1.5
= 1125 cm3

Area of Tank B
= Volume ÷ Height
= 1125 ÷ 15
= 75 cm2

Length of Tank B
= 75 ÷ 25
= 3 cm
