Q1. In the figure (refer to attachment), not drawn to scale, 1/4 of the circle is shaded. The ratio of the area of the square to the total area of rectangle and circle is 5:7. 40% of the square is shaded and 1/3 of the rectangle is shaded. What is the ratio of the area of the shaded parts to the area of the unshaded parts in the figure?
Ans: 1:4 (unconfirmed)

Q2. Roger had some fairy lights. He used 1/3 of the fairy lights to decorate 15 small Christmas trees and 2/5 of the fairy lights to decorate 6 big Christmas trees. He kept the rest. Each big Christmas tree had 14 more fairy lights than each samll Christmas tree. How many fairy lights did Roger have at first?
Ans: 315

Hey Kuro,

I believe your 2 Questions come from SHHK (Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan ) 2012 Prelim paper 2. (Q9, Q16 respectively).

As for Q2, the worked solution was already provided and it can be found on pg 3 of this forum (as at Jul 21) (Subject: Hokkien Huay Kuan Prelims 2012 Q16, last posted Jun 26). Thank you.

For your Q1, the worked solution is as follows:

Q1.

1 : 3

Total (SC + UC) = 4 units = C

SQR : (R + C)
5 : 7

40 : 60
2 : 3

Total (SSQR + USSQR) = 5 units = SQR

1 : 2

Total (SR + UR) = 3 units = R

Since these 3 totals of C, SQR and R correspond to the respective units of the ratio, SQR : (R + C),

SSQR : (UC + USSQR + UR)
2 : (3 + 3 + 2)
2 : 8
1 : 4

=========

Trust this helps.

Do let me know again if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
