1. Mdm Ang bought some highlighters, pens and mechanical pencils. 1/4 of them were highlighters. The number of pens she bought was 6 more than 1/2 the total number of all the items and the remaining were mechanical pencils. Each of the highlighters, pens and mechanical pencils cost \$2.10, \$4.05 and \$1.60 respectively. She spent a total of \$227.10 on the items. How many pens did she buy altogether?

Hi <eqkt>,

Following is my worked solution:

Q1.

H: (1/4)total
P: (1/2)total + 6 = (2/4)total + 6
M: (1/4)total - 6

Let (1/4)total be 1 unit (1u). So we have ...

H: 1u
P: 2u + 6
M: 1u - 6

Using <number x value> method, we have ...

(1u × 210) + [(2u + 6) × 405] + [(1u - 6) × 160] = 22710
210u + 810u + 2430 + 160u - 960 = 22710
1180u = 22710 - 2430 + 960
1180u --> 21240
1u --> 18

P = 2u + 6
2u + 6 --> (2 × 18) + 6
= 36 + 6
= 42

===========

Trust this helps.

Do let me know again if this is different from your <Answerkey> or if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
