1. Every month, Sally saves 3/8 of her salary while her sister saves 2/7 of his allowance and spends the rest of it. Sally takes 1 1/4 years less than her sister to save a sum of $3600.
(a) If her sister spends $300 every month, how long did she take to save $3600?
(b)What is Sally's monthly salary?
(There's no answer key)

Hi,

Solution:
(a) Since the sister spends $300 per month, it means
her saving is $(300/5) x 2 = $120.............[she spends 5/7 of salary]
so, time taken for her to save $3600 = $3600/$120 = 30 months.

(b) Sally takes 15 months less than her sister [1 2/4 years = 15 months]
so she takes (30 - 15) = 15 months to save $3600.
Her monthly saving is therefore, $3600/15 = $240
and this is 3/8 of her salary.
Thus, her salary is $(240/3) x 8 = $640.

thanks (no worry re "answer key" stuff)
