1. Every month, Sally saves 3/8 of her salary while her sister saves 2/7 of his allowance and spends the rest of it. Sally takes 1 1/4 years less than her sister to save a sum of \$3600.
(a) If her sister spends \$300 every month, how long did she take to save \$3600?
(b)What is Sally's monthly salary?

Hi,

Solution:
(a) Since the sister spends \$300 per month, it means
her saving is \$(300/5) x 2 = \$120.............[she spends 5/7 of salary]
so, time taken for her to save \$3600 = \$3600/\$120 = 30 months.

(b) Sally takes 15 months less than her sister [1 2/4 years = 15 months]
so she takes (30 - 15) = 15 months to save \$3600.
Her monthly saving is therefore, \$3600/15 = \$240
and this is 3/8 of her salary.
Thus, her salary is \$(240/3) x 8 = \$640.

thanks (no worry re "answer key" stuff)
