help needed.
thanks

A fruit-seller packed some oranges into 14 small boxes and 15 big boxes. There were equal number of oranges in each small box and equal number of oranges in each big box. Each big box contained 5 more oranges than each small box. 716 of the oranges were packed in small boxes. How many oranges were there in each big box?

ans: 30

sorry, but have you copied the question correctly?

If it says there were 716 oranges packed into small boxes and there were 14 small boxes, then 716/14 = 51.1428...
and if you sort out this, you need to add 5 to get no. in a big box?

thanks.

Hey <shino.dino>

Following is my worked solution:

14S = (7/16) --> 7u
1S --> (7/14)u = (1/2)u
15B = (9/16) --> 9u -- (1)
1B = 1S + 5
15B = 15S + 75 = (15/2)u + 75 -- (2)

(1)=(2)
9u = (15/2)u + 75
9u - (15/2)u = 75
(3/2)u --> 75
1u --> 75 ÷ (3/2) = 75 × (2/3)
= 50

in (1), 15B --> 9u = 9 × 50 = 450
1B = 450 ÷ 15 = 30

========

Trust this helps.

Do let me know again if there's further clarification.

Cheers,
Edward
