Q1. Mrs Tan bought some forks and spoons in the ratio of 5:2. Each spoon cost 80 cents more than each fork. She spent \$172 altogether and the amount she spent on the forks was \$28 more than the amount on the spoons.
a) How much did she spend on the forks?
b) What was the cost of each spoon?

Q2. Mory had 40% more stamps than June. Clare had 20% fewer stamps than Mory. Then Mory and June gave Clare some stamps. As a result, Clare had 75% more stamps than before and June had 24% fewer stamps than before. In the end, Clare had 58 more stamps than Mory.
a) How many stamps did June give to Clare?
b) What percentage of the total number of stamps did Clare give have in the end? (Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place)

Following are my worked solutions:

Q1

Given total amount (F+S) <Spent> is \$172, we have ...

2u --> 172 - 28 = 144
1u --> 72

(a)

F <Spent> = 72 + 28 = 100
S <Spent> = 72

(b)

<Qty>

F : S
5 : 2

F:
5u --> 100
1u --> 20

S:
2u --> 72
1u --> 36

Given each spoon(S) cost 80 cents more than each fork (F), we have ...

in the same 1u of S and F, the amount difference is ...

36 - 20 = \$16
1600 ÷ 80 = 20

Hence, number of F or S is 20 (1u)

Cost of each S = \$36 ÷ 20 = \$1.80
