Shouldn't Singapore have such a place too? Then our kids can start choosing & working towards their careers...

"Baby Boss City, " a theme park for children aged between 3 and 15 years old to "get a taste of adult working life, " opened in the Taipei Living Mall over the Lunar New Year holiday, allowing children to "try out their dreams jobs, explor e career aptitudes and learn about the value of money, " according to its creative director.

"Baby Boss City is the first of its kind in the Greater China Area, " said Richard Tsai, who added that the project took a year of preparation and an investment of NT$400 million (US$12.4 million) by the SECOM Group, a local security company.

He said the concept came from a similar theme park called "Kidzania" in Mexico and other derivations such as "Wannado City" in the United States.

Kidzania, which opened in Mexico City in 1999, has turned out to be a huge success, receiving about 800,000 visitors annually. Japan and Indonesia also opened similar theme parks in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

"Kids like hands-on experiences where they can learn about an occupation by talking about it or better yet experiencing it through `job shadowing,'" Tsai said.

The 7613-square-meter Baby Boss City is a unique indoor family entertainment center, a micro-city replicating a real city with streets, buildings, retail outlets and vehicles.

Children can play adult roles in over 70 professions and occupations in this "real world replica, " according to Tsai, who added that it is a "safe, interactive and educational center where children actually perform the roles they are playing. "

Chu Han-kuang, marketing manager of the SECOM Group, said that led by a highly qualified team, "children will learn about the complexities of the adult world, its infrastructure, occupations and the value of money, just as in real life."

Designed to have children work independently without their parents around, the children will spend 35-45 minutes at every job, which the organizers claimed will allow them to "learn about the professional knowledge and experience the entire process" of working a job.

"Kids cannot focus on their work, think independently and choose what they really want to do with parents intervening, " Chu said, adding that parents can nevertheless take pictures from outside the huge glass windows.

Children begin the game with 20 "Baby Bucks, " the official currency of the "Baby Boss City," and will earn 10 "Baby Bucks" after finishing every job. They can use the money to buy goods and services or deposit it in a bank.

"Kids need to know that they are here to work. Therefore they are not supposed to take home the products but can buy them with special discounts, " Chu explained.

Liu Yang-hsin, mother of an 11-year-old, said the concept "is really good. Kids can learn and find out their interests from the games, which may help them decide what they want to do when they grow up. So I will definitely bring my kid again."

However she complained that since there were too many people, her child could only experience three jobs in three hours. Liang Hsiu-fen, mother of a six-year-old, added that the tickets are also too expensive.

"Parents need to pay NT$500 per person while a child's ticket costs NT$900," she pointed out.

Tsai said tickets bought online are 15 percent cheaper and reservations can be made up to three months in advance.
